1. When and where do you hold practices?

We have two team practices per week, Sunday and Wednesday.  Sunday practices are held at Lodi High School and Wednesday practices are held at the Madison West YMCA (15's-18's) and Madison Turners (14's).  On Mondays we hold setter practice at Madison Turners.  Anyone can come to Monday practice to work on individual skills.  Specifics on practices can be found on the PRACTICES web page.

2. What types of tournaments do you attend and how often?

We average two tournaments per month and our tournaments start in January and end in June.  About half of our tournaments are multi-day events.  The 15's-18's age groups attend 2 national qualifiers and the 14's attend 1 national qualifier.  Last year our multi-day tournaments were held in Minneapolis, MN., Chicago, IL., Indianapolis, IN., Kansas City, KN., Austin, TX..  Our single day events are using held in the Badger Region (Wisconsin), Great Lakes Region (Northern Illinois), and the Iowa Region (Eastern Iowa).  We can usually travel in the morning and return in the evening to Madison for these single day events.  We will also host some of our own tournaments in the Madison area (Madison Open).

3. How much does club cost?           4. What does the club fee cover?

The club fee for 14's is $800 and the fee for 15's-18's is $850.  The fee for 14's is a bit less because their tournament entry fees cost less.  These fees cover the cost of uniforms, tournament entry fees (except June), USAV registration, equipment, coaches expenses (except June), gym rental, etc..  These fees do not cover the cost of travel such as hotels, meals, gas, etc..

Payments are spread over the season as a convenience to our families.  We require a $195 start-up fee when the player commits after tryouts and then the remainder of payments are spread over the season in monthly payments (roughly $86/month for 14's and $94/month for 15's-18's).

June tournaments are handled on a team by team basis since this may include national championship tournaments.  Player will be charged an additional fee for any June tournaments.  For instance, last year all our teams attended the ASICS Junior National Tournament in Chicago (3 day event) and this cost an additional $75/player.

7. My daughter wants to play other sports.  How do you handle potential conflicts?

We understand that many of our players are part of their high school athletics and other activities such as dance, music, forensics, etc..  In addition, academics come first in whatever time conflict that may present itself.  We do however, expect a serious commitment to Wisconsin Select practices and tournaments.  Wisconsin Select exists to help our players improve their level of play and to demonstrate that against some of the best competition within USA Volleyball.  To do that we need to have all of our players together working as a team.  We inform our players early about the tournaments we expect to enter and expect feedback on possible conflicts.  We also expect to be informed by our players in advance about when they will be late or miss a practice.  Each team will define what a player can expect when they miss practices are tournaments, especially if they miss without prior notice to their coach.

8. How many players do you have on a team and how many teams do you have per age group?

Wisconsin Select carries ten players per team and we have one team per age group.  Ten players allows us to give all of our players a good amount of playing time and still gives us some buffer in case a player, for whatever reason, is unable to attend a tournament.  We have one team per age group.

9. Do you conduct fundraising?

Wisconsin Select as a program of the YMCA of Dane County needs to get approval to conduct some types of fundraising.  If our parents are interested in fundraising we will create a parents' committee with representatives from each team to organize and execute those activities.  We always sell concessions at our Madison Open tournaments.  The parents of the Wisconsin Select team in our tournament will organize concessions.

10. What if my daughter can't make one of the tryout dates?

If your daughter cannot attend one of our tryout sessions let us know.  On the first day of tryouts part of the session deals with physical testing.  If you daughter can come at another age groups time to do the physical testing that would be okay.  If she cannot attend any session on the first day then she should try to come about 1/2 hour earlier on the second day to do the physical testing.  In either case, make sure you let us know about the situation so that we can expect her at a different time.  You can send us an email at wisconsinselect@tds.net to let us know of the conflict and how you plan to address it.
